Possible subjects for my applied project…
Create an informational book about Northeastern bird species/just one species containing my own illustrations and basic info about each species (diet, habitat, conservation status etc.) I think this project will be informative as well as nice to look at. I believe that it is important for us to have a basic understanding about our surrounding fauna and their conservation status.
Create a ‘how to…’ Possible subjects: identify bird species, identify animal tracks… This could help readers gain a better understanding of the natural world and how to learn more about your surroundings in nature.
Conduct a survey among students on what animals they fear/hate due to cultural stigmas. I really want to find out the real reason why there are so many fears and hatreds for certain animals. I want to see if they are actual phobias of culturally inspired hatred. Animals like snakes, spiders, sharks etc are always getting a bad rap in media. I want to inform people that most of the time, these species are harmless unless threatened just like any other animal.
Conduct an event in the Lamson Library where student can illustrate a bird of their choice which will then be hung up in the library. The work of this applied project will be carried out by myself and another student. We would inform student of PSU of the surrounding bird species and their current conservation status, habits, diets etc.
